400,000 acres surround the bay here, split between Kachemak Bay State Park and Kachemak Bay State Wilderness Park. The former was the first area legislatively designated as a state park in Alaska's system, while the latter is the only legislatively designated wilderness park in the state. No road reaches most of the land, so getting in normally means flying or taking a boat from Homer.
