About Wood-Tikchik State Park
Two connected systems of lakes and the rivers feeding them make up the bulk of this park's land, which spans more than 1,600,000 acres, roughly the size of Delaware. That makes it the largest state park in the country, accounting for more than half of all Alaska's state park acreage and 15 percent of the nation's total. For years after its 1978 founding it had no staff at all, and it has sometimes been patrolled by a single ranger working from an aircraft.
