About Colonel Allensworth State Historic Park
1908 marks the founding of Allensworth, the only California town established, financed and governed by African Americans. The park preserves this small farming community, created by Lt. Colonel Allen Allensworth along with Professor William Payne, minister William Peck, miner John W. Palmer, and real estate agent Harry A. Mitchell. Allensworth, a friend of Booker T. Washington, drew inspiration from the Tuskegee Institute and aimed to build what supporters called the "Tuskegee of the West," a settlement meant to advance the economic and social standing of African Americans.
