About Stone State Park
Bluffs and ravines along the Big Sioux River were set aside near the northern edge of the Loess Hills, where clay bluffs and prairie give way to sedimentary rock hills and bur oak forest. The nearly 1,600-acre park spans Woodbury and Plymouth Counties and overlooks the South Dakota-Iowa border, with exposed bedrock of lignite, shale, sandstone, and limestone dating to the Cretaceous period and containing marine fossils. Steep slopes hold prairie plants such as yucca, penstemon, and pasque flower, and the park offers many miles of hiking and equestrian trails.
