About Garden Island State Recreation Area
734 acres make up this unit, an island sitting within Lake of the Woods itself, accessible only by water. It lies about 19 nautical miles from Zippel Bay State Park and near the Northwest Angle, the northernmost point of the contiguous United States. The land became part of the Minnesota state park system in 1998, protecting acreage surrounded entirely by the lake's open water.
