The Mississippi River begins here, flowing out of Lake Itasca at the park's headwaters. The park covers 32,690 acres of northern Minnesota within the Pine Moraines and Outwash Plains Ecological Subsection, and its land extends across Clearwater, Hubbard, and Becker counties.
