About Caballo Lake State Park
Caballo Dam went up across the Rio Grande in the 1930s, and the reservoir it backed up became Caballo Lake, the water this park sits on. The dam stands 96 feet tall and stretches 4,558 feet across the river. When full, the lake covers more than 11,500 acres and runs 18 miles long, ranking as New Mexico's third largest lake, though its size shifts with the season.
