About Fort Totten State Historic Site

For 13 years the fort standing on the shores of Devils Lake served the US Army during the American Indian Wars, garrisoned to keep peace among regional tribes and guard travel routes through the area. Following its 1890 closure, the buildings continued in use for nearly seven decades as the Fort Totten Indian Industrial School, a boarding school for Native American children. The complex earned a spot on the National Register of Historic Places in 1971, recognized for how thoroughly its structures from the Indian Wars era survived intact.
