About Fort Leaton State Historic Site
23.5 acres hold an adobe structure built in the early 19th century as a private residence, later bought in 1848 by Benjamin Leaton and converted into a fortress. It served as the original seat of county government and passed through several owners amid disputes and periods of abandonment before being deeded to the state in 1967. The building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1973, and the site is now managed by the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department.
