About Point of Rocks Stage Station State Historic Site
Sandstone outcroppings along the old Overland Trail mark the spot where this stage station once stood at the junction of that route and the Union Pacific Railroad line. Built in 1861 or 1862 midway between the Black Buttes and Salt Wells stations, it served travelers until the railroad's arrival in 1868 ended the stage business, after which it operated as a freight depot supplying mines near Atlantic City and South Pass. By 1877 it had become a residence, reportedly at one time home to Jim McKee of the Hole in the Wall Gang, before Wyoming acquired the property in 1947.
