About Spitler Woods State Natural Area
202.5 acres make up this natural area, with the eastern two thirds designated an Illinois Nature Preserve for its old-growth stand of white oak and hickory. It sits within the Decatur metropolitan area and is managed by the Illinois Department of Natural Resources. The protected grove represents mature forest cover rather than replanted or cleared woodland, which is the main resource this site preserves.
