About Western Gateway Heritage State Park

Exhibits housed in a former railyard tell the story of how the Hoosac Tunnel was built, laid out on grounds that once served as a working freight yard. The Department of Conservation and Recreation manages the grounds, and the freight yard itself carries a listing on the National Register of Historic Places, added in 1972 as the Freight Yard Historic District. The focus here is historical rather than natural, centered on the rail industry that shaped the area.
