About Bennington Battlefield State Historic Site

This site preserves part of the ground where New Hampshire, Vermont and Massachusetts militia under General John Stark repelled a British force led by Colonel Friedrich Baum on August 16, 1777, as the British tried to seize American supplies. The battlefield sits along New York State Route 67 in Walloomsac, a road that historically connected Bennington, Vermont to the Hudson River, and it was named a National Historic Landmark in 1961. Beyond the state-held acreage, more than 23 additional acres of the battlefield have been acquired and preserved separately by the American Battlefield Trust and its partners.
