About Big Bog State Recreation Area
A raised peat bog forms the core of this 9,459-acre property, alongside surrounding swamps and scattered upland areas that locals call islands. The recreation area protects one of the larger undeveloped bog ecosystems within the Minnesota state park system, a landscape shaped by standing water and slow-growing vegetation rather than typical forest or prairie terrain. Access runs along Minnesota State Highway 72 north of Waskish.
