About Red River State Recreation Area
Following the catastrophic flooding of 1997, this land was set aside to give the Red River of the North and the Red Lake River room to rise without threatening the city again. The recreation area sits where these two rivers meet, forming part of the Greater Grand Forks Greenway that stretches through East Grand Forks. Its purpose is tied directly to flood protection, shaping open space along both riverbanks rather than dense development.
