About Painted Rocks State Park
Granite and rhyolite cliffs rise at the southern end of Painted Rocks Reservoir, their grey and black rock faces streaked with green, yellow and orange lichen that gives the park its name. The reservoir sits well outside any city glow, and the park's skies fall into Bortle scale class 1, the darkest rating for night viewing. Visitors come for the rock walls above the water and for stargazing conditions rated among the clearest classifications used to measure night sky darkness.
