About Fort Owen State Park
One acre of land preserves the remains of Fort Owen, built in 1841 as a mission and later a trading post named for John Owen. The site sits at 3,293 feet in elevation and is managed by the Montana Department of Fish, Wildlife and Parks. It carries the nickname "cradle of Montana civilization," reflecting its role in the state's early settlement history.
