About Valley of Fire State Park
Nearly 46,000 acres of red Aztec Sandstone make up this preserve, formed from dunes that shifted some 150 million years ago. The rock formations, which give the park its name, take on a fiery glow when they catch sunlight. This is Nevada's oldest state park, a status marked by Nevada Historical Marker #150, and it was designated a National Natural Landmark in 1968.
