About Clayton Lake State Park
The reservoir at the center of this park covers 170 acres and sits among rolling grasslands, volcanic rock, and sandstone bluffs on the western edge of the Great Plains. Beyond the water, the park holds a fossil trackway of preserved dinosaur footprints. The surrounding land once served as a stopover for travelers on the Cimarron Cutoff of the Santa Fe Trail, and the area lies close to where New Mexico meets Colorado, Oklahoma, and Texas.
