About Culberson Woods State Nature Preserve
One of the largest surviving stretches of white swamp forest in the region grows here, a type of woodland once widespread across the upland till plains of Ohio and Indiana. The ground is white clay that drains poorly, leaving the forest floor wet through winter and dry by summer. The preserve protects this seasonal wetland habitat rather than offering built recreation features.
