About Red Rock Canyon State Park
Wagon wheel ruts cut into the canyon floor mark where California Road travelers once stopped to gather fresh water and repair their wagons before continuing west. Before that settlement era, Plains Indians used the canyon as a winter campsite. The canyon also holds the only surviving stand of native Caddo maple trees, a species not found elsewhere in its natural range.
