About Smith Rock State Park
Sheer cliffs of tuff and basalt rise above the Crooked River, formed by volcanic activity that shaped the High Desert landscape long before the park existed. The site is widely regarded as the birthplace of modern American sport climbing and continues to host advanced climbing routes used for sport climbing, traditional climbing, multi-pitch climbing, and bouldering. A tent-only camping area serves visitors staying overnight, while the day-use area operates from dawn to dusk.
