About Thompson's Mills State Heritage Site

A working grist mill dating to 1858 anchors this site, rebuilt after an 1862 fire using hand-hewn timbers that visitors can still see inside today. Over the decades the operation shifted from grinding flour to processing feed and finally generating hydroelectric power, running continuously until 2004, which made it one of the state's longest-operating water-powered businesses. Oregon acquired the property that same year and opened it to the public in 2007. Daily guided tours let visitors watch the turbines and machinery in motion, while the grounds are being brought back to their 1910s to 1930s appearance, including an heirloom orchard and heritage poultry.
