December 6, 1846 marks the date fought here, when United States troops led by General Stephen Kearny clashed with Californio forces under General Andres Pico. The site preserves the ground where this confrontation unfolded, recorded as the bloodiest battle to occur in California during the Mexican-American War. It stands as a memorial to the soldiers who took part in that fight.
