About Hontoon Island State Park
Access to this 1,648-acre island is limited to boat traffic or a passenger ferry operated by the park, since no motorized vehicles besides wheelchairs may come ashore and swimming is not permitted. The surrounding waterways include the St. Johns River, the Hontoon Dead River, and Snake Creek, which wrap around the land on all sides. Inland, the terrain shifts between pine flatwoods, hammocks of palm and oak, and swampy stretches of bald cypress and marsh.
