About Windley Key Fossil Reef Geological State Park
Exposed walls of fossilized coral line a former quarry once worked by Henry Flagler's crews in the early 1900s to cut stone for building the Overseas Railroad. After the railroad was finished, the site kept producing a decorative stone called Keystone, some of which was used to build the Hurricane Monument at Mile Marker 82 in Islamorada. Visitors can still see original quarry machinery left in place among the cut rock faces.
