Confederate troops built earthworks here to guard the St. Johns River during the Civil War, positioning the fort near the river's mouth to control access upstream. The site preserves those fortifications on New Berlin Road in Jacksonville's Northside area. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in September 1970, marking its recognition as a preserved piece of the river's wartime defenses.
