About Volo Bog State Natural Area
Designated a National Natural Landmark in 1973, the bog earned that status for being the only open-water quaking bog left in Illinois. Beyond the bog itself, the grounds hold stretches of woodland, savanna, marsh, prairie under restoration, shrubland and old fields, all kept under the care of the Illinois Department of Natural Resources. The mix gives visitors a range of habitat types to move through on a single visit.
