About Mine Creek Battlefield State Historic Site
Fought on October 25, 1864, the Battle of Mine Creek pitted roughly 2,800 Union troops against about 8,000 Confederate soldiers along the banks of Mine Creek. It ranks among the largest cavalry engagements of the Civil War and stands as the only major battle fought on Kansas soil. Union brigades under Colonels Frederick W. Benteen and John Finis Philips defeated the Confederate force here, and the retreating troops were later pursued and beaten again in Missouri as they tried to reach Arkansas, the Indian Territory, and Texas.
