About Grant Cottage State Historic Site

Ulysses S. Grant spent his final weeks in this Adirondack mountain cottage on the slope of Mount McGregor, dying there of throat cancer on July 23, 1885. After his death, the Mount McGregor Memorial Association and a succession of live-in caretakers preserved the house as a memorial to the former president. It became a New York State Historic Site in 1957, was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1971, and was named a National Historic Landmark in 2021.
