About Fort Macon State Park
A masonry fort built under the Third System of US coastal defenses stands at the center of this park, replacing an earlier Second System post called Fort Hampton on the same stretch of Bogue Banks. The protected grounds cover 424 acres, making this one of the smaller state parks in North Carolina, yet it draws about 1.3 million visits a year, ranking second among the state's parks for attendance.
