About Jockey's Ridge State Park
427 acres hold the tallest active sand dune system in the eastern United States, rising above the Roanoke Sound. Three ecosystems meet within the park, the dune field, a maritime forest, and the sound itself, and rainfall often pools at the base of the dunes to form temporary vernal ponds. Vegetation near the dune bottoms is limited mostly to tall grasses. The park is set up for day use only, with no campgrounds on site.
