About Dismal Swamp State Park

The Nature Conservancy helped establish this land as a state natural area before the North Carolina General Assembly re-designated it a state park in 2007, opening to visitors in 2008. That opening gave the public its first legal access to the Great Dismal Swamp on the North Carolina side. The protected tract covers 14,432 acres straddling the North Carolina and Virginia border, with a canal used by boaters traveling the Intracoastal Waterway and several miles of trails for hiking and biking.
