About False Cape State Park

A one-mile-wide sandy spit separates the Back Bay of the Currituck Sound from the Atlantic Ocean here, with land access limited to foot or bicycle travel through the adjoining Back Bay National Wildlife Refuge, or by boat and canoe from the bayside or ocean shore. The park covers 4,321 acres along the Currituck Banks Peninsula, extending south to the North Carolina line. It takes its name, along with that of the former Wash Woods community it contains, from mariners who mistook the shoreline for a barrier island near Cape Henry and ran aground there in rough weather.
