About Rough Rider State Park
The Little Missouri River runs along the eastern edge of this park, with camping, horse camping, and canoeing available on and near its banks. The name recalls the 1st United States Volunteer Cavalry, the Rough Riders, once led by Theodore Roosevelt, who hunted and ranched in this area during the 1880s. A presidential library honoring him is under construction nearby. The park carried an earlier name tied to nearby Sully Creek until a 2024 change that also weighed the legacy of General Alfred Sully's campaigns against the Sioux.
