Private landowners deeded the property to the state in 1974, and it opened to visitors nearly a decade later. The park covers 1,938.7 acres straddling Kendall and Comal Counties, with a stretch of the Guadalupe River running through the land. It falls under the management of the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department.
