About Hueco Tanks State Historic Site
Rock basins called huecos, hollowed into the stone here, have collected rainwater for travelers and inhabitants of this dry stretch of west Texas for thousands of years, and the site takes its name from them. Spanning 860 acres, it holds National Historic Landmark status and a place on the National Register of Historic Places. The county deeded the land to the state in 1969, with 121 more acres bought the next year, and the site opened to visitors in May 1970 under the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department.
