About Donner Memorial State Park

Part of the Donner Camp, where members of the Donner Party became stranded by heavy snow in the winter of 1846-1847, lies within these grounds. Cut off from shelter and food in the high Sierra Nevada, the group resorted to cannibalism to survive the ordeal. The camp site itself has been designated a National Historic Landmark, marking the ground where that history unfolded.
