About Fort Ord Dunes State Park

Four miles of Monterey Bay coastline make up this stretch of former Fort Ord land, converted to public use after the military base closed. A paved road running the length of the park serves walkers and cyclists, alongside a boardwalk and a path leading to the beach, with interpretive exhibits explaining the site's past as a training ground for soldiers. Because the dunes serve as nesting habitat for sensitive species, visitors are kept to the designated paths and trails rather than allowed to roam freely across the sand.
