About Marshall Gold Discovery State Historic Park

A replica of Sutter's Mill stands near the spot where James W. Marshall found gold in 1848, the discovery that set off the California Gold Rush. The 576-acre park covers much of Coloma, a former town now recognized as a National Historic Landmark District and treated as a ghost town. Three California Historical Landmarks sit within its grounds: a monument to Marshall, the actual discovery site, and Coloma Road.
