The mansion at the center of this site was built as a private residence before the state purchased it in 1903. Fourteen governors have called it home, with occupancy spanning 1903 to 1967 and then again from 2015 to 2019. California State Parks has managed the property as a historic site since 1967, preserving the building that once housed the state's chief executives.
