About Indian Grinding Rock State Historic Park

A limestone outcropping holds roughly 1,185 mortar holes, described as the largest collection of bedrock mortars found in North America. The rock sits in a small valley at 2,400 feet in the Sierra Nevada foothills, surrounded by open meadows and large valley oaks that once supplied acorns to the Miwok people who lived in the area. Covering 135 acres, the site was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1971, nine years after the park's founding.
