About Putnam Memorial State Park

Winter quarters chosen by Major General Israel Putnam for his troops during 1778 and 1779 form the historic core of this land, marking one of the Continental Army's Revolutionary War encampments. The grounds preserve that site as Connecticut's oldest state park, a status dating to its founding in 1887 at the request of local Redding residents. Recognition followed in 1970, when the encampment site was added to the National Register of Historic Places.
