About Shoal River Headwaters State Park

Sandhill, flatwoods, slope forest, and floodplain habitats surround the point where the Shoal River and its main tributary, Gum Creek, begin. This land also acts as buffer for Eglin Air Force Base while connecting to nearby conservation tracts as part of the Florida wildlife corridor. Gopher tortoises and eastern indigo snakes live within these communities. Opened January 23, 2026, this became the 176th site in the Florida Park Service system and the first new addition since 2017.
