About Port Hudson State Historic Site
From May 23 to July 9, 1863, Union forces held the longest siege recorded in the country's military history at this spot along the Mississippi River. Preserved fortifications, redoubts, and gun emplacements remain from that campaign, along with a museum and markers explaining the fighting. Reenactors gather annually to reenact the siege. In 1974 the grounds earned National Historic Landmark status, tied to the first Union combat role held by African-American troops under African-American officers.
