About Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park
Ojibwa people gave these low mountains their name for the crouching porcupine outline they saw in the ridgeline near Lake Superior's shore. The peaks shelter over 31,000 acres of old growth northern hardwood forest, the largest such stand found anywhere west of the Adirondacks. Lake of the Clouds sits at the center of the range and draws most visitors to the area.
