About Barnegat Lighthouse State Park

A working lighthouse marks the northern tip of Long Beach Island, built to guide ships heading to and from New York Harbor past dangerous shoals stretching from the shoreline. Fast currents and shifting sandbars made this stretch of water difficult for sailors to navigate. The park is recognized as a maritime stop on the New Jersey Coastal Heritage Trail and is maintained by the New Jersey Division of Parks and Forestry.
