About Jones Beach State Park

Robert Moses oversaw the creation of this park on Jones Beach Island during his tenure as head of the Long Island State Park Commission, as part of his broader parkway development across Long Island. Workers dredged sand from what is now the State Boat Channel to raise the barrier island's elevation by fourteen feet and to merge several smaller islands into one continuous landmass. The park is reached by the Meadowbrook State Parkway, Wantagh State Parkway, and Ocean Parkway, which connect the barrier island to Long Island.
