About Lake Waccamaw State Park
Formed thousands of years ago as one of the Carolina bays, the lake at the center of this 2,398-acre park is thought by the U.S. Geological Survey to be a relict thermokarst lake, created when frozen ground thawed and was reshaped by wind and water during a colder, drier, windier climate. That interpretation points to permafrost once reaching as far south as this part of North Carolina during past ice ages. The park protects the shoreline surrounding the lake.
