About Little Pee Dee State Park

A sand rim borders part of a Carolina Bay preserved within the park's land. Geological survey research interprets these bays as relict thermokarst lakes, formed thousands of years ago in a colder, drier, windier climate when permafrost thawed and was reshaped by wind and water. That interpretation points to permafrost once reaching this far south during past ice ages.
